간단하면서도 정겹게 어린아이에게 days of the week, how to count to five, how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly 에 대해 가르치는 책이다.

 

저자며 illustrator 인 Eric Carl 은 애벌레의 발달과정을 유머 스럽게 그리고 어린아이가 이해 할 수 있게 아주 화려하고 밝은 색상으로 illustrate  하였다. 그는lollipop 과 컵케익 등 아무거나 잘 먹는 아주 귀여운 애벌레로  독자의 관심을 끈다. 좋아하는 음식을 실컷 먹고 배탈이 나는 애벌레의 곤란한 처지를 어린아이 라면 누구나 이해하게 된다.

 

다음날 애벌레는 “nice green leaf” 를 먹구난 후 “ he felt better” 로 절제하는 모습도 보여 준다. 애벌래는 먹으면서 점점 커지고 누에고치로 변태하며 드디어 스위스 치즈와 오렌지 그리고 채리 파이의 색을 가진 나비로 탈바꿈을 한다.

 

숫자 세기의 레슨도 포함되어 있다. 애벌레가 먹는 음식이 one apple, two pears … five oranges 로 표현된다.  애벌레가 먹은 음식에 난 구멍에는 아이가 조그만 손가락을 넣고 싶게 하는데 애벌래가 성장 하면서 책의 구멍도 커진다.
